I'm not all that great at troubleshooting X issues, but I'd recommend checking out the Arch wiki on the topic. It's also possible that happened due to something else entirely. The error you got sounds to me like an issue with either X itself or an issue with a driver it relies on. For your second question - maybe? Depending upon what was installed, it might have borked your Xorg install.
